Andrey Lappa is a rare yoga master, having grown up in the former USSR. He has traveled and spent many years in India, Tibet, Nepal as well as the vast mountainous regions of his native Russia and neighboring China. He has had the opportunity to study with the living legends of the Krishnamacharya lineage - BKS Iyengar, Sri K Pattabhi Jois and TKV Desikachar. He has been teaching yoga professionally since 1987, served as president of the Kiev Yoga Federation since 1999 and helped create 2 of the largest yoga centers in Ukraine. He is the author of several books and has produced several DVDs.
Andrey is the founder of Universal Yoga. One of his students and iHanuman Yoga Teachers, Mara Healy, contacted us to do some recordings with Andrey in her native Charlotte, North Carolina. It was there where we captured this interview between Mara and Andrey as well as a full length Universal Yoga Class. It is with great honor and humility that we offer this interview as well as the audio and video recordings of Andrey's Universal Yoga Class. The interview will help you to understand a bit about what is the intent of Universal Yoga and then you will be able to experience first-hand a universal yoga class.
The Universal Yoga class is somewhat different than most yoga classes. For starters, practitioners use two mat set up in a cross formation as the practitioners use the mats in as a sort of moving mandala facing each of the four directions. You may consider watching the class once to get a feel for the practice and then you can join in the practice. Some of the practices are quite advanced, so please only attempt poses which are within your skill level. Enjoy!
Yoga is a practice, philosophy, and way of living based upon several ancient texts including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. (Listen to An Introduction of the History and Philosopy of Yoga) The physical practice of Yoga, called Asana, often constitutes the majority of the practice for most Westerners, but it is actually just one aspect within the much broader and encompassing system of Ashtanga Yoga or Eight-Limbed Yoga ( Ashta - Eight, Anga - Limb). The eight limbs are: Yama - Universal Ethics, such as non-harming, non-stealing, and moderation; Niyama - Personal Ethics such as cleanliness, contentment, and self-study; Asana- Physical Yoga Poses; Pranayama - Breathing Techniques; Pratyahara -Withdrawal of the Senses; Dharana- Concentration; Dhyana - Meditation on the Divine; and Samadhi- Union with The Divine. Think of the Limbs like a Tree, as the Founder of Iyengar Yoga, BKS Iyengar, describes in his book, The Tree of Yoga. Each part is a composite of the whole.
