One of the first students I had the opportunity to work with at the Virginia Institute of Autism, often greeted me in the morning with a line from the Yoga Kids video he’d memorized, “Cynthia, we’re all one!” He always looked a bit surprised when I responded with “Yes, that’s right!” I was a perfect teacher for this budding yogi. We used yoga poses to learn numbers, “Find number 5 and do tree pose!” “Find 8 and do dog pose!” We practiced belly breathing together. Once when we were driving in my car together he announced, “Cynthia, you are the sun, the sky, and the whole world, Cynthia, you are LOVE!” I will always view this boy as one of my greatest teachers. I watched him struggle to overcome the challenges that his diagnosis of Autism presented him with. I was continuously excited about and engaged in the inquiry around how best to support him in his life and to assist him in his education. Beginning on June 22nd, in partnership with my employer, the Virginia Institute of Autism, I will be offering a yoga class for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I am excited about this opportunity and hope that you will join me in spreading the word.

The class is open to children ages 8 – 12 and will meet for 6 weeks on Wednesdays (6/22 – 7/27) from 3:00 – 4:00. Inquiries should be sent to my attention at cwoodring [@] viaschool.org or by calling VIA at 434-923-8252.
