After 11 years of increasingly intense yoga practice, with some wonderful teachers, and a few not so wonderful, I have been looking at Yoga Teacher Training Programs as a means to deepen my practice and learn more than asana technique. I feel that teaching itself would be an enriching and exciting experience that might give me the opportunity to download some of the joy, release and discovery I have been blessed to receive through yoga. But I have not found the right fit, yet. Thank you John Schumacher for so eloquently reinforcing this view. The view that Yoga is a personal journey, that may lead to teaching. But that "becoming a teacher" is not the point. "Being" a Yogini who teaches others with compassion and commitment, is. PREM.

Erich, you are a "voice in the wilderness" coming out in our hearts--we immediately recognize the Truth of that which you speak. I am softened immediately. I am challenged immediately but with an embrace of the moment. It is as if I know now why we are here. You continue to fill the Universe with its ancient Wisdom. Joel says, he thinks you are marvelously perceptive of our current lives.
Love,
Anna (from FPR and NC)

I discovered Yin Yoga by accident. Two weeks ago I went to my regular Vinyasa class and discovered the time had been changed and I was actually in this "Yin" class. At first I was disappointed, but once class was over I realized that it was exactly what I needed to add to my life and yoga practice.

Since my gym only has Yin once per week, I sought out a way to supplement that. Thank you so much for sharing your work and knowledge. I enjoyed this workshop/class immensely on this Saturday afternoon and look forward to deepening my yoga practice.

I have had such terrible hip and pelvic tightness that my regular yoga wasn't helping. Yin yoga is such a simple solution, and after only two classes I feel benefits.

Thank you!

Hosh Yoga is anon-profit studio located in Greenpoint Brooklyn, NY. We provide open classes to public on pay-what-you-wish basis every day. All of our teachers are volunteers and are happy to spread the love of yoga around. We do our best to practice Karma Yoga on and off the mat and are delighted to share it with everybody in the community. As a matter of fact starting this month we have expanded our schedule to provide more opportunity to practice for our fellow yogis and continue doing so.

Namaste

love it, hate it, needed it and feel goooooood....
defenitely a good boost to keep up the yinpractise and a beautiful combination with the chakra-readings, i'm glowing from bottom to top:)
i've been aware of some imbalances for a while now but was intrigued when during frogpose my throat started to really ache, like having been in a smoke-filled room and waking up the next morning..
any ideas about that?
thanks again, and keep flying!!

I have enjoyed the simplicity of Mr. Schumacher's explinations of the very intricated, yet vast study of yoga. From the most basic physical pose to the complex reasons of our most internal practice. I have fallen deep in love with the practice of yoga on and off my matt, and each moment is an invitation to freely open another awakening in myself and to the world around me. Thank you for freely inparting this lecture.

[...] Many people have spent the greater part of their lives reading, reciting, contemplating, and in Prahaladan’s case, translating, this ancient spiritual text. Prahaladan had the great honor of working with Sri Swami Satchidananda on his translation of the Gita, called The Living Gita: The Complete Bhagavad Gita-A Commentary for Modern Readers. Sri Swami Satchidananda is the disciple of Swami Sivananda, of the Divine Life Society. He is famous for speaking at the Great Woodstock Festival of 1969 and is responsible for creating the Integral Yoga School and an Ashram in central Virginia, which is lovingly called, Yogaville. He was an enlightened being with a light and beautiful heart. Luckily, his legacy is carried on through his devotees and you can view video clips of some of his talks through a previous iHanuman Feature. [...]

There is another side to this story; I was very impressed with Bo, Sita, and the Human Kindness Foundation when all I knew was what I read in their material. However I learned from personal experience and from those of my friends that Bo has serious personal problems with anger, sexual misconduct, and a formidable power trip. He tried to set up a cult where he would be the center of attention, devotion, and obedience; anyone objecting would be abused with his anger and the foulest of language; I know this as he directed this at me in letters. After a sexual scandal the ashram scene fell apart and Bo left the state.

I recommend reading

[...] In this week’s feature we share an interview with Bo Lozoff, co-founder of the Prison Ashram Project and Human Kindness Foundation, who went from political radical in the 1960’s to a spiritual teacher who, for the last 35 years, has focused his service on the millions in our nation’s prisons. This challenging and often heart-breaking environment has given Bo a wide perspective on spiritual life, demanding that it be centered on true self-realization and finding that it often calls us into a deeper engagement with the world. We hope you enjoy it! Thanks for helping to build the bridge with iHanuman. [...]

I’m a middle aged woman who just happened to pick “We’re All Doing Time” off of the library shelf in West Vancouver, BC Canada and it has started a change in me that was long overdue having misspent a lot of time with posers pretending to be something they aren’t and drinking themselves into a pseudo happy state. I guess I was one of them; selfish and unaware. Bo’s down to earth wisdom reached a part of me that knew there was more to life than this. I have been reading the newsletters on humankindness.org and have been inspired by the stories and letters from people in the worst situations who have attained enlightenment. Thank you for allowing access to this interview – it is the only time I have heard Bo speak. Bo – you are reaching people who needed help so badly they didn’t even know it; people living soul less lives who look like they have it all but are only grasping at air.

Thank you for posting this great interview with Bo Lozoff. Hanuman has been teaching me for about two years now, and this wonderful Spiritual teacher, (along with his wife and partner Sita), exemplifies the life of service of Hanuman, deeply inspiring my life. He has changed the lives of uncountable thousands of people in and out of prisons all over the world.

I am a registered yoga teacher in the akhanda tradition (Yogi Vishvketu/babaji) though I teach a variety of styles. I've been delighted to work closely with teens for the past couple of years and find it to be an enriching and yes challenging experience at times. I also find that teens not only respond well to variety but indicate that they prefer change...however, its been my experience that this is less because it hones their listening capacity, but more so because teens get bored by repetition. Their endurance and stamina is less that of an adult (think of the getting- up -and -going -to- school -everyday -syndrome) and the fruits of that type of regularity is less apparent to this focus group than that of others. What I find works is to have small sets of repetitive sequences that I add on to with other targeted asanas...and each class I add another repetition onto this (such as sun salutation B) to slowly develop that endurance. Teens are honest sometimes....but they'll also reserve their judgment and distance themselves if your not quick to respond to their energy. I give teens a healthy dose of direction but also allow them to direct the tempo, certain asanas, and their music. They bring their ipods (the only request is that the music won't offend others in the room and we rotate who brings each class), they suggest poses to work on for the class, and they let me know if they're too tired, too excited, too whatever to do a particular posture for the day. I don't force them, I meet them halfway. Just like I do my 6 yr old or my husband. THANK YOU so much for this exploration, I will continue to find much inspiration from Ms. Brock. And thank you for speaking to the why behind your draw to this population...I had to laugh at the irony of being offered all these teen classes as my teen years were quite tramatic...it has been a beautiful opportunity to revise my perspective and to meet some unbelievably incredible people. Om Shanti shanti shanti

I also find that teens not only respond well to variety but indicate that they prefer change…however, its been my experience that this is less because it hones their listening capacity, but more so because teens get bored by repetition. Their endurance and stamina is less that of an adult (think of the getting- up -and -going -to- school -everyday -syndrome) and the fruits of that type of regularity is less apparent to this focus group than that of others. What I find works is to have small sets of repetitive sequences that I add on to with other targeted asanas…and each class I add another repetition onto this (such as sun salutation B) to slowly develop that endurance. Teens are honest sometimes….but they’ll also reserve their judgment and distance themselves if your not quick to respond to their energy. I give teens a healthy dose of direction but also allow them to direct the tempo, certain asanas, and their music. They bring their ipods (the only request is that the music won’t offend others in the room and we rotate who brings each class), they suggest poses to work on for the class, and they let me know if they’re too tired, too excited, too whatever to do a particular posture for the day. I don’t force them, I meet them halfway. Just like I do my 6 yr old or my husband. THANK YOU so much for this exploration, I will continue to find much inspiration from Ms. Brock. And thank you for speaking to the why behind your draw to this population…I had to laugh at the irony of being offered all these teen classes as my teen years were quite tramatic…it has been a beautiful opportunity to revise my perspective and to meet some unbelievably incredible people. Om Shanti shanti shanti

Thank you, I have your book for years. While attending a workshop at Lourdes in NJ, Nita Spielburg mentioned your site and spoke so highly of you. So I checked it out this beautiful morning and really enjoyed just listening.. Your conversational tone is so relaxing and yet the knowledge offered is so deep. I love the part about just having to do something. I have acted on that premice many time and it always took me to me to a place of growth. Just jumping into life, not waiting until you are more prepared or more knowledgeable trusting in your own existance. This is a leap of faith, allowing and knowing. Many blessing coming your way for having courage , perseverence and the audacity to believe in yourself. Love, Agnes

I have experienced such things too in studying with some Iyengar teachers-rough attitude, and very strong judgement, and a sense that you are wrong or broken and need to be "fixed" and that only at the teachers knowledge. Even as a very sensitive and experienced yoga, made to feel basically incompetant. It's a shame as there is much to learn-yet it feels like the heart, compassion is missing. Om shanti.

Hafa A'dai Christy,

Your work is sooo inspirational.

I teach gentle and mixed level yoga to primarily adults. (primarily in their 40's and up)

I volunteered to do a day of 3 separate 60-90 minute yoga sessions at a high school my friend teaches theater at.

He would like us to focus on Chakras and sequences to help them get out of their heads.

The sequences that you demonstrated on your video on this site as well as tips were marvelous. I would probably first start out with warm-ups and basic alignment concerns before jumping into the flows as well as pranayama for centering and relaxation at the end.

If you would be so kind as to give me any other tips or sequences I could use with this population I would be so appreciative.

Have you worked much with Chakras with teenagers? My friend would educate them about it from hand-outs I'll give him before I come to the school to prepare them. I thought I could illustrate how different poses help to open up target chakras, and have them visualize the color associated with each one. Any other ideas are more than welcomed.

I'm really looking forward to teaching teenagers for 'the day'.

Happy New Year.

Namaste,
Linda

Thanks,

Thank you for the wonderful interview with two amazing people who have a lot of love for Jarvis. I too am a close friend of Jarvis and had the opportunity to visit him twice in San Quentin at East Block before he was allowed contact visits in May 2007. The opportunity to meet this amazing human being has made a huge impact on my life on soo many levels, I have shared his stories with countless others here in Australia and overseas since I first read his book, "Finding Freedom: Writings from Death Row" in December 2001. I read his book in one afternoon and couldn't put it down. I have since read his book more than twenty times and have given it to so many of my friends to read. He is truly amazing!! I am soo looking forward to reading his second book, "That Bird has my Wings: the Autobiography of an Innocent Man". Thank you once again for sharing your story about Jarvis.

With Love and Peace,
