National Institutes of HealthMay Day! May Day!

Sorry to sound alarmist, just trying to get your attention! It seems to be what the earth is trying to tell us this month. Wake up and bloom, flowers! Wake up and smell the flowers, people. Just wake up! There is much to celebrate in May.

May Day marks the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Already? May Day is International Worker’s Day. May is when we celebrate our mothers. And The National Institutes of Health is celebrating Yoga this month with Yoga Week!

With these thoughts in mind, it seems like a grand occasion to let your spirits soar with the joy of spring approaching summer. Take your hats off to all of the worker bees, like Hanuman, who humbly make all of our lives more enjoyable. And give thanks for all of the women in our lives who love us.

In this issue, we want to share with you a new feature with Erich Schiffman and his thoughts on Technology, Yoga and Consciousness. We have new teachers in the community this month. And iHanuman will be covering the National Institutes of Health Yoga Week! Stay tuned for more updates from this incredible event with talks from teachers like Alan Finger, John Schumacher and Dr.Timothy McCall, Author of Yoga As Medicine!

Thanks for helping to build the bridge with iHanuman.

The Kyitsel-ling Sikkim Project

Tibetan Children's Education FoundationIn 1997, The Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation built an education center and boarding hostel in Clement Town (in Northern India) for children of the exiled Tibetan community. His Holiness the Dalai Lama named the center Kyitsel-ling, which roughly translates as “a place for growing up in happiness.” Building on their success at Clement Town, The Tibetan Children’s Foundation is now working to build a similar Kyitsel-ling in Sikkim, a remote state in the Himalayas, which will offer quality educational opportunities to underprivileged and needy children there, many of whom are children of nomadic Tibetans.

“These children are scattered in various rural and far flung areas and although their school fees etc. are provided, their attendance at schools is irregular and unsatisfactory. Also, invariably all their parents are illiterate and cannot provide them any guidance or teaching at home. In order for these children to be able to go to school on a regular basis and for them to have further support for their education at home, we need to build an education center at this location. Doing so will ensure that all these children ( and hopefully hundreds more over the years) will attend school regularly and also have access to reference materials, computers and teachers to help with their home work and provide the necessary support at ‘home’.”

For more information on The Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation, please visit www.tibetanchildrenseducation.org. There you can read more about the Sikkim Kyitsel-ling Project, and find out how you can support their inspiring work.

First DaffodilsNamaste!
Spring is here and feels great as it invigorates our joints, hearts and minds. We begin to move out of hibernation to feel the sun on our skin. Relationships are renewed and it is a great time to set an intention or sankalpa for our practice as we move into the woody growth phase of spring.

iHanuman would love to contribute to your well-being by offering a Bliss class as this week’s feature. We would also like to introduce you to some new teachers as well as provide you with a delectable spring recipe provided by iHanuman Yoga Teacher and Ayurvedic practitioner, Sara Avant Stover.

We hope you enjoy our offerings and share them with new friends.

Street Heat

Street Heat, now in its 10th year, is an inspiring program in Vancouver that provides winter clothes to many of the city’s homeless population. The driving force behind this program’s success is volunteer yogis from Prana Yoga Teaching College and The Space, in conjunction with support from the community and socially conscious local businesses.

Please visit Street Heat’s website (www.streetheatproject.org) for more information on its history, vision, and how you can get involved. Who knows? This may inspire you to start something similar in your community this winter!

We also closed out the old year with a review in FitYoga Magazine. We believe this was very auspicious in our first year and hope to have more articles in magazines in the new year. So, if you haven’t already, tell a friend about iHanuman and help us spread the word.
