Kate Hallahan | RYT's Teacher Profile

Founder of the Guerrilla Yoga Project and co-director of Charlottesville Yoga School, Kate has been teaching yoga since 2002.  With a background deeply rooted in the philosophy of yoga, her teaching emphasizes awareness, poise, and presence in our postures both on and off the mat.  Perhaps most influential in her teaching style is her devotion to her daily personal practice.

Kate is grateful to her primary teacher, Kofi Busia, who is one of the world’s foremost instructors in the Iyengar tradition.  She has also been inspired by other senior teachers in the Iyengar, Anusara, and Hatha Yoga traditions, as well as her studies in Buddhist meditation.  She is grateful to her students, who offer her continuous inspiration and who ask her questions for which she does not have the answer–yet!  And she offers many bows to her amazing circle of yogi friends, who provide her with unconditional love, clear reflections, and guidance on the path.

The Guerrilla Yoga Project is a network of donation-based yoga classes in Charlottesville, Virginia and the surrounding counties.  Based on the premise that good health is a right, not a privilege, the GYP seeks to level the playing field by bringing yoga to all sectors of the population.  Classes are taught by qualified teachers who have been trained in yoga anatomy, physiology, history, and philosophy, as well as the art of teaching.  In addition to outreach classes taught at public housing and jails, GYP teachers also offer classes for the general public at various community centers, churches, and dance studios.

Charlottesville Yoga School is a Yoga Alliance-approved teacher training program taught by Jennifer Elliott, Kate Hallahan, and Jen Fleisher.  Offering a total of 200 hours of study in two weekends per month, the five-month program provides comprehensive instruction in asana, pranayama, mantra and meditation practices.  This core curriculum is complemented by classes in anatomy and physiology; physical adjustments and use of props; sequencing of postures; yoga philosophy and ethics; Sanskrit pronunciation; and other topics designed to broaden students’ personal practice and build confidence in teaching.  With a unique approach that artfully combines both the intellectual and the experiential, students experience the transformative physical, mental, and spiritual effects of a regular, intensive yoga practice.  A residential option is available for those who would like to spend training weekends staying at the beautiful campus on a working farm.

The Soul’s Reflection in a Leaf

I was talking with an old friend recently about the wishes of childhood that we have left behind, the deep desires that were once sent out into the universe with the superstitious blowing of a fallen eyelash, but that have faded with the passage of time.  To my surprise, I realized that although countless eyelashes [...]
