The Ramayana (or "Way of God") is a sacred epic that has inspired and instructed millions of Hindu worshippers for over 2,400 years. In this lively retelling, Bo Lozoff narrates and explains the "crest jewel of ancient India" with fresh relevance to modern times. This recording serves well as in introduction to The Ramayana for Westerners who are unfamiliar with the story, and as an enjoyable reminder of its depth for those who have read a longer version. Musical accompaniment by Jai Uttal, Krishna Das, Bhagavan Das, and Amazing Grace.
The Ramayana
Bo Lozoff's elegant retelling of the Ramayana -- the metaphor-rich 24,000 verse epic poem about spiritual moxie, infinitely-accessible love, and the power of faith -- satisfies precisely that craving. It guides the listener back to the heart’s compass over and over, and offers a universally relevant template for understanding how it is we stumble and for remembering that no matter the magnitude of our confusion, conscious experience of union with the divine is not only within our reach, but is our birthright.
As Lozoff notes in his own words introducing the Ramayana at the beginning of the audio -- like all great spiritual texts, it directs us toward the “singular inner experience on which every spiritual tradition is based” and reminds us what we’re doing here to begin with.
Time whizzes by in this roughly three-hour audio, thanks to Lozoff’s mesmerizing voice and judicious sprinkling of chanting by Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, and others at appropriate points in the "story." I listened to this audio on a train and was a little disappointed when the train arrived at its destination, as there was still a little more left that I hadn’t heard and I couldn’t bear to turn it off! Lozoff gives his listeners a very great gift in explaining the tale of Rama, Sita, and Hanuman in language that speaks to today’s audience crisply -- and with a lovely balance of humor and reverence.
This is, bar none, among the most compelling, sweet, and profound audios I’ve listened to in years; it’s a must-have for any student of spiritual texts or, indeed, anyone who can use a reminder that bridging the chasm between our confusion and our experience of divinity is not only possible, but a birthright. Thank you, Bo. Thank you.
