Tim Miller Shares the Yoga Sutra and A Light Practice

Ashtanga Yogi Tim Miller

It was another incredibly gorgeous spring night in Central Virginia when Tim Miller arrived for his annual weekend workshop at the Yoga Barn in Ivy. Our recording begins with Sutra I.4 Vrtti Sarupyam Itaratra and Tim asks, If we are not identified with the essential self with what then are we identified? Tim leads us to Sutra I.12, Abhyasa Vairagyabhyam Tannirodhah and reminds us that "The practice of yoga is really the art of learning how to let go... It is a lifelong process as we find ourselves peeling the layers of the onion." Finally, Tim settles in to help us explain Sutra I.30 vyadhi styana samsaya pramada alasya avirati bhrantidarsana alabdhabhumikatva anavasthitatvani cittaviksepa te antarayah.

Tim shares his humor and his love of his Guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who says "You Do!" And is famous for the phrase, "Do your practice and all is coming." Tim and other practitioners who have spent the last 30 years practicing yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois are now carrying the light of Guruji to their students. They gracefully carry the masculine Surya strength of the yoga practice to the next generation of yoga practitioners. And we are honored to share this selection with you for Father's Day and the Summer Solstice, the great celebration of the Sun.

The full length recording of this class along with a led primary series recorded on Hanuman's Birthday and an afternoon session of the subtle practices of the Ashtanga Yoga Practice will be available on iHanuman later this summer. Enjoy this short selection and stay tuned to find more of Tim's teachings. Namaste.

* We recorded Tim's Sutra Talk in 2007, you can listen now to Tim's introduction of the first 4 Yoga Sutra.
