Most of you know, if you have been subscribed to the iHanuman Newsletter for some time, that we pay a lot of attention to the changes and transitions of the natural world. Every year, we are prompted by traditional healing philosophy to reinvigorate pranayama practice in the fall. The fall is the season of letting go and releasing as well as the organs of the Lungs and Large Intestines.
There is so much emphasis on the physical practice of asana in most yoga classes. This physical movement is important to help move the energy through the meridians or nadis, as they are called in the traditional Indian philosophy of yoga. Asana practice helps us stay physically fit as we move energy through the body, strengthen and stretch our muscles, and clean out our physical vessel. Once we have established our asana practice, however, it is integral that we begin to establish our pranayama practice. Pranayama practice has a similar effect of moving energy/breath through the channels of the body and clearing these channels on an even deeper level.
I was fortunate to have spent several years apprenticing with Senior Iyengar Teacher, John Schumacher, and during this time, I attended his year-long pranayama class. During these weekly hour-long pranayama classes, John methodically introduced the practice of pranayama and took us through the lying down and seated ujjayi and viloma pranayama practices, as well as more advanced digital pranayama. After several months of daily practice my pranayama practice became as important, if not more so, than my asana practice. This practice is a gift and something that is even easier to take with you as you travel through life’s ups and downs and the various seasons of life.
