Ground Yourself During the Turmoil. Support Our Kiva Loan and Help us Raise $10,000!
It has been an exhausting couple of weeks here in the United States. In addition to everything we normally have going on in our lives, we are being tormented by misinformation, lies and deceit in the executive office of our government. It is hard to keep up with it all and this is leading to frustration, hopelessness and overwhelm. What can we do? I mentioned in our last newsletter that the ancient yogis suggest following one or all of the paths towards self-realization through study, selfless service and devotion to a higher power.
It is most important that we stay grounded during these times and thankfully our yoga practice offers us many options:
1. Standing Poses, Standing Poses, Standing Poses. When in doubt, standing poses are very grounding. Standing poses are appropriate for beginners and they can be practiced almost anywhere and with minimal props. Check out these videos we made with Senior Iyengar Teacher, John Schumacher, teaching many of the beginning standing poses.
2. Restorative Yoga - On days when standing poses feel like too much, try some calming restorative poses. The simple action of lying in Savasana for a few minutes and taking slow steady even breaths in and out can have a profound calming effect. If you have access to props, try a pose like Supta Virasana. If you are constantly on the road, Urdhva Prasarita Padasana, upward extended foot pose, may do the trick.
3. Eat Grounding Foods - Root Vegetables, like potatoes and squash, and whole grains, nuts and seeds are very grounding. Roast your root vegetables with a little bit of oil, salt, pepper and your favorite spices. Yum!
4. Connect with each other and with the earth. Get outside. Get off of your computer and go for a walk, preferably with other people. In fact, include your friends and family in all of the activities above - practicing yoga, eating whole foods and being together in nature. We will get through this together.
Wishing you Much Love and Compassion,
Sara Miles Pope Agelasto
