January 2014: New Year, Introduction to Yoga, Nobel Peace Prize and Women's Yoga

Katie Silcox

Happy New Year!

Is it already the last week of January?! It's not TOO late! The Chinese New Year happens this weekend beginning with the New Moon on January 30th! Time to REALLY make those New Year's resolutions and re-evaluate what is working in your life and what you need to change with this New Year. Sources tell us that this New Year of the Wood Horse is going to be a wild ride! Can you already feel it? With everything happening around us we are so grateful for our yoga practice to keep us grounded, calm and balanced.

We DO, however, want to point out a couple of timely items before the end of the month. First, there is a movement to nominate Mr. BKS Iyengar, for a Nobel Peace Prize. The petition to nominate Mr. Iyengar ends February 1. Please take a moment to click this petition and nominate him for his lifelong contributions to Peace through Yoga.

We mentioned LAST month that we are contributing our charitable donations to the Philippine Islands' Recovery Effort after the devastating Typhoon in November 2013. 5% of ALL sales through the end of January will go towards these recovery efforts. Beginning in February, our donations go to a recovery effort closer to home. We will support the cleanup effort and help bring safe drinking water to families effected by the Chemical Spill in West Virginia.

Finally, there are some incredible yoginis who have recently relocated to the southeast, specifically Virginia. We are so happy to welcome them to our area. One of these Yogini's was nominated One the Best Yoga Teachers under 30 in San Francisco! Please help us welcome, Para Yogini, Katie Silcox, to Virginia and Listen for iHanuman recordings with her coming soon!

There are many exciting things afoot this year, we are looking forward to continuing the celebration with you! Stay Tuned In and Turned On!

With Love and Gratitude,

Sign the petition to award the Nobel Peace Prize to BKS Iyengar! Yogacharya (yoga master) Iyengar brought yoga to the west with his pioneering teaching in the 70s, the beginning of today’s explosive growth in yoga. His manual, Light on Yoga, called “the bible of yoga” and continuously in print since 1966, has been the source book for generations of yoga students.

His invention of yoga props -- now ubiquitous in yoga studios of all styles -- revolutionized the art. Mr. Iyengar also brought to light the therapeutic applications of yoga, gaining recognition for yoga as treatment for serious medical conditions. Please consider BKS Iyengar's influence on your own practice and that of your students and Signing a Petition to nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize. Nominations Close February 1st! Sign the Petition Here.
