Although it has been a turbulent winter and we can still expect some cold and rainy days ahead, Spring finally feels like it is on its way. We are, however, reminded that according to Ayurveda, there are actually 6 seasons. Surrounding our seasons are transitional seasons which are usually marked by wind and rain. So stay alert!
The change of seasons is the ideal time for cleansing the body. Since Spring is the time of the Liver/Gallbladder in Traditional Chinese Medicine, you may consider some cleansing practices with these organs in mind. The liver is often overworked and overwhelmed with caffeine, sugar, fats and processed foods. Give your liver a break by eliminating substances which are difficult to process. This time of year is an opportunity to look at some of those items in your diet, which you may have relied on to get through the long winter months.
Add more Fresh Green Leafy Vegetables which are in season Now! You can even start with some of the leaves growing in your garden, like dandelion, violet and chickweed. All of these leaves are cleansing and nourishing to the liver. Add a little bit of lemon juice and olive oil to your greens and further detoxify the liver and the gallbladder. The Liver loves the sour flavor and eating healthy organic fats helps the gallbladder clear itself out and do its job more effectively.
Limit your use of screens and artificial light as the liver processes these activities too. Cut down screen time by choosing to do something different after work or school. Shut the computer down and go for a walk, enjoy a sunset, practice yoga & meditation, or spend some quality time with friends and family.
The muscles, tendons and ligaments are governed by the Liver and Wood Energy. Wood energy is dynamic, moving energy. Wood likes to grow, extend, reach and build. Spring is an optimal time to reinvigorate your yoga practice. Practice Standing Poses to build up strength and stamina after a long, cold winter.
Hope is the spiritual quality of the Spring. Use your eyes to see clearly and develop a sustainable vision for the future. The liver (and most organic operating systems) choose the most effective and efficient route to achieve the desired outcome. Spring gives us the opportunity to determine What is Our Desired Outcome? And What are the most efficient steps we can take to Achieve this Outcome?
