What Kind of Yogi Are You? Study Ancient Wisdom during Challenging Times

Lois Steinberg, PhD

"In his search he discovers the three noble ways of word (jnana), work (karma), and worship (bhakti), which teach him that his inner light is the only guide leading to mastery over his own life.” - BKS Iyengar, Light on Pranayama

On the days following the inauguration of the 45th president of the United States, we cannot help but reflect on what it is that we can do to be of maximum service. We believe that many of us who practice yoga, do so, not only for the sensations we experience in our physical bodies, but also for the relief we find during times of grief, fear, overwhelm and uncertainty. It is during these times that our yoga practice is really put to use; this is truly what we practice for. So we are drawn towards the wisdom of the great sages, like Sage Patanjali, in his text the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Amongst the many teachings in the Yoga Sutras, we are educated about the paths towards Self-Realization, the ultimate aim of the practice of yoga. Our choices are the Yoga of Wisdom (Jnana) that through self study and study of the scriptures, we gain knowledge of the Truth. This knowledge can be used for one's own benefit and for the benefit of educating those around us to help in times of chaos and distress.

The second path towards Self-Realization is the Yoga of Worship or Devotion (Bhakti). The practice of Yoga itself is not a religion, but it does encourage a discovery of and the development of a relationship with a power greater than yourself. This devotion practiced through repetition of mantra and prayer helps us find solace when we are fearful and overwhelmed.

The third path towards Self-Realization is the Yoga of Action (Karma). This work is the discovery of your dharma (duty) and can be fulfilled through selfless service towards others. When we are depressed or anxious, we can lift ourselves out of the depths of despair by working in the service of others.

The fourth path towards Self-Realization is Raja Yoga which is a combination of these three previous paths. So What Kind of Yogi are you? A Jnana Yogi? A Bhakti Yogi? A Karma Yogi? Or a Raja Yogi? We recommend translations of the Yoga Sutras by BKS Iyengar, Sri Swami Satchidananda, Kofi Busia and Jaganath Carrera, if you would like to read more.

Since we opened our doors, iHanuman has always donated at least 5% of every sale towards non-profit organizations. Over the past couple of years we have donated thousands of dollars to disaster relief in the Philippines and Nepal. In 2017, we will donate towards organizations that protect the environment and our precious natural resources. As one of my teachers says, "There are many causes, but you have to pick one." As always, we thank you for your continued support.
