A true artist can sense when he has achieved the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. In the category of "yoga rock stars" and kirtan ( a form of Indian devotional music) leaders, Jai Uttal is such an artist. I had heard his voice many times:bellowing through the speakers of the car stereo as I sped down the highway, whispering through the earphones of my iPod as I jetsetted overseas, buzzing softly in the lobby of yoga studios as I unfurled my mat. But meeting the face and the personality behind his victorious voice and eclectic melodies felt surprisingly like visiting with an old friend.
Kirtan is the practice of devotional chanting, the coming together to sing God’s glories and elevate one’s consciousness from the mundane to the Divine. The uplifting vibrations created by singing the names of the Lord purifies the mind and stirs the heart.
Kirtan gives strength and awakens nobility. It harmonizes the nerves and eradicates doubt. By reflection and worship of God, love, serenity and compassion are greatly increased, promoting a positive and pleasant temperament. The cosmic harmony and divine intoxication the Sadhaka acquires through Kirtan removes the erroneous ideas of birth, death, bondage, and all dualities.
Saucha is perfect purity in body, thought and action—internal and external cleanliness. Internally, saucha allows the mind and body to be free of all impurities so that they may reflect the highest spiritual truth.
September is Yoga Month so we hope to provide you with lots of ideas and opportunities for practicing yoga this month. On September 20, 2009, Los Angeles Yogis are inspiring yoga communities around the world to come together and practice yoga collectively. Events are being coordinated world-wide in the name of yoga, seva and collective consciousness. The aim is to show the power of prayer and meditation when practiced communally and intentionally world-wide. From the Global Mala Project website:
began in 1996 with a group of Canadian yoga teachers working together to bring yoga into British Columbia's correctional system. Since then they have expanded their focus, promoting healing and transformation by bringing yoga to many other populations who would not have access otherwise. Volunteers now teach over 30 classes per week in settings ranging from health care to transition houses, shelters to treatment and recovery centers. On May 22-24, 2008, Yoga Outreach will hold its 10th Annual Fundraising Retreat to support its services and important mission:
