During the Fall Session, poses are centered around twists in all shapes and sizes from standing and seated poses to inversions. This Level III class begins with a discussion on Faith and then moves into a practice of Forward Bends, including Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana, Akarna Dhanurasana I, Parsva & Parivrtta Upavista Konasana. The focus is on the hips and inner groins. All John's classes follow the Iyengar method of yoga, based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, the foremost living yoga teacher in the world. His rigorous approach emphasizes a balance between strength and flexibility, builds endurance, and develops Self-awareness through precision in movement and attention to subtleties of body, breath, mind, and spirit. Level III classes are for students with previous Iyengar training who are strong in standing poses and can do headstand, shoulderstand, and plow with confidence. You will be expected to perform salamba sirsasana, salamba sarvangasana, and halasana for up to fifteen minutes in Level III classes. Please do not attempt these poses without the proper preparation.
John also breaks his classes down by session. During the Fall Session, poses are centered around the hips and twists in all shapes and sizes from standing and seated poses to inversions. In the Spring Session, John concentrates on strengthening poses to build stamina, like standing poses, abdominal strengtheners and arm balances. During the Summer Session, John practices cooling forward bending poses to balance the heat of the season. John teaches backbends from the more subtle to the more complex in the Winter Session to raise the heat during the coldest, darkest season of the year.
