This class covers the basic principles and foundation postures of Iyengar Yoga, as is recommended for students who: are new to yoga, returning after some time away, and coming from other traditions/styles of yoga practice. Basic asanas (the Sanskrit word for postures) are introduced, including standing, sitting, and inverted poses. Props, such as blankets, blocks, and straps, may be used to adjust yoga postures to individual needs. The standing poses are emphasized because they bring strength, flexibility, alignment, and vitality to the physical body. Instructors use the Sanskrit names for each of the asanas, provide the English equivalent, and orient students to their fundamental shapes and actions. Regular repetition of these poses increases familiarity. This safe and gradual learning approach fosters competence and confidence in the postures, facilitates self-understanding, and increases the benefits, which come from the practice of yoga. Each class ends with savasana, final relaxation, followed by a short, seated meditation.
