Kymberly’s approach to yoga is notable for an emphasis on attention, alignment, breath awareness and “unconditional friendliness” in the face of physical limitations. She instructs with kindness and a touch of humor, seeking to create an environment where each student feels welcome, safe and free to explore. Her yoga and personal studies embrace meditation, health and fitness, with a particular interest in therapeutic yoga and exercise. Her yoga classes provide guidance for her students to understand and respect individual requirements while opening a window onto the timeless, expansive joys of yoga.Kymberly has extensive experience in both yoga and rehabilitative exercise. In 2005 she collaborated with physical therapists from the National Rehabilitation Hospital to develop and lead a class for women recovering from breast cancer surgery. She continues to work within the cancer community, offering weekly classes and occasional workshops for patients, caregivers and patient navigators through Hope Connections (formerly The Wellness Community DC), Smith Center for the Healing Arts and area hospitals. In her private practice, Kym leads classes in Restorative Yoga and Gentle Yoga for Health Conditions as well as individualized yoga and exercise sessions. She is recognized as E-RYT 200 with Yoga Alliance, is a certified Cancer Exercise Trainer with American College of Sports Medicine, and a Medical Exercise Specialist with the American Council on Exercise. Kymberly began Hatha yoga classes as a student of Sita Frenkel (Swami Gurudevananda) in 1980. Ten years later, while pursuing a career in exercise and fitness management, she was directed to Unity Woods Yoga Center, where she found a passion for yoga that continues to this day. As a student at UWYC for almost 15 years, her primary teacher was John Schumacher ~ she is grateful to have taken classes with many other senior Iyengar teachers during that time. After several years as a diligent student, she realized that her knowledge of traditional exercise and fitness was a complement rather than a conflict with her understanding of the yoga asanas, and she began to develop her skills as a teacher.
