How can you resist the allure of yoga? From the time I was young, both the athletic side and the spiritual side of me were attracted to the yoga practice. In 1988, I read several of the great yoga texts as a student of Philosophy and Comparative Religion at Dalhousie University in Halifax. When I had an opportunity to learn hatha yoga, I jumped at the chance. I loved the mellow practice. Combined with meditation, it was the perfect centering activity for a young, energetic adrenaline junkie like me.
For the most part, the gentle hatha yoga I practiced then was a nice warm up before doing crazy extreme sports. After finishing my degree in Nice, France, in 1992, I delayed my original plan of getting a Master’s Degree in the Philosophy of Love and followed my life long dream of moving to Maui for a big taste of mangoes and pounding surf. Little did I know at the time, that Maui just happened to be one of the hot spots on the planet for Power or Ashtanga Yoga.
When I first tried Power Yoga there, the practice spoke so clearly to me. I made a commitment to make yoga a central part of my life. It was so whole and complete. Not only was it like a trip to the gymnasium to practice fun and challenging poses, but it was also like a trip to the temple and the university too. There wasn’t an aspect of my being that the practice didn’t touch.
After Hawaii, love brought me to Japan (what else could pry a surf-crazed young man from Hawaii’s North Shore). One thing led to another and I started a company that exported and built custom home packages in Osaka. Although the money was great, I knew that I wasn’t on the center of my wheel and “following my bliss,” as Joseph Campbell would say.
So, I said “Sayonara” to Japan and once again, “Aloha” to Maui for more delectable fruit, surf and yoga. During this time living in Hawaii, my passion for yoga became so much larger than me. In late 1999 I moved back to Vancouver and began this journey into teaching, sharing and promoting yoga and bliss.

I woke up Sunday morning to an email message from my friends who were visiting from California saying, "I am so sorry that your event got rained out...." It did rain for the Yogathon and Blissfest. Hard, torrential rain. In retrospect, I am so glad it did.
We just finished our Yogathon and Blissfest meeting last night. There is so much to do to make an event like this happen. Last night, I went to bed probably like all the other committee members thinking "man, there is so much to do for this event it is overwhelming.
