Established in 1980. California Yoga Center offers daily classes and weekend workshops in the Iyengar tradition.
One of the first yoga schools in San Francisco and the first Iyengar teacher training program in the US, the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco (IYISF) has trained thousands of students and teachers from around the world since its establishment in 1974. IYISF is recognized for its tradition of excellence by offering students a comprehensive curriculum that provides a challenging, profound, and rewarding learning experience in the hatha and ashtanga yoga traditions as taught by B.K.S. Iyengar. IYISF is home to over 40 public classes each week, over 25 workshops with nationally and internationally recognized Iyengar teachers, ongoing Introductory Series for new students, free monthly yogic philosophy lectures, abundant community events and service opportunities, a retail shop and a resource-rich library with a unique collection of rare yoga publications. IYISF offers programs for every type of yoga student: new students, beginners, intermediate and advanced practitioners, teachers-in-training, current teachers and experienced teachers. IYISF’s teacher training program is taught by one of the most experienced and diverse faculties in the US and is approved to operate by the State of California. Approval to operate means compliance with state rules and regulations for post secondary education institutions.
The first studio in town, Blue Ridge Yoga opened in the 80s and then turned into Allied Yoga. Now Iyengar Yoga of Charlottesville is here to serve you with the same dedication, offering Iyengar yoga for everyone, from complete beginners through more advanced students.
One of the hallmarks of Iyengar yoga is that poses can be modified in a variety of ways to make them accessible to anyone. Too stiff to touch your toes? Back too tight for a backbend? Our rigorously-trained teachers know how to observe and correct alignment, sometimes using props so you can fully experience each pose and get the benefits of yoga right from the start.
