Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, Founder of Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga

From Ashtanga.com, Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta, an ancient manuscript said to "contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy" (Jois 2002 xv). The text of the Yoga Korunta "was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900's by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927" ("Ashtanga Yoga"). Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (Jois 2002 xvi), according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara [disciplic succession] (Jois 2003 12).
Ashtanga yoga literally means "eight-limbed yoga," as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of the following eight spiritual practices; Yama [moral codes], Niyama [self-purification and study], Asana [posture], Pranayama [breath control], Pratyahara [sense control], Dharana [concentration], Dhyana [meditation], Samadhi [contemplation] (Scott 14-17).

Spirituality and Science Spirituality and Science is seen by many as two separate things. What we normally call Science is that which we can measure, see and prove. From that perspective, Spirit is perhaps the last thing to be found in any microscope. Both science and spirituality are the search for truth. Science searches the truth of the physical world. Spirituality searches the truth of the consciousness and its relation to the physical world. Science and Spirituality Science provides us with information, but brings about no spiritual growth or transformation But Spiritual or contemplative approach must lead to a profound personal transformation in the way we perceive ourselves and the World

We REALLY want to know. What do YOU want? April feels like the culmination of a great deal of work on many levels. We have made it through a long, challenging Winter where we spent time downsizing and taking inventory of what is working and what is not. We have made some hard decisions and have let go of what is no longer serving us. With the return of Spring is the Return of Hope. , the spiritual quality of the spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

There is an aspect of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga practice called tristana. Like "yoga" it is both a practice and the state achieved through the repetition of that practice. I'm hoping to get up a few blogs that will look at tristanafrom a few viewpoints, all of which have emerged organically from practice and teaching. First of all, though, let's lay the groundwork with some definitions and background.
We Are Under the Hood of the NEW iHanuman Website. We have a little more work to do, but we have DEFINITELY been Out and About recording new Yoga Media! This summer we Dreamed and Grew. Now it's Time to Reap, Harvest and Let Go! The Autumn season reminds us that we CANNOT do EVERYTHING and We CAN let go of our own timeline to open to something BIGGER. We need a little more time to unveil our NEW site, but we hope you will PRACTICE PATIENCE with us.
Summer is the Pitta or Fire Season of the Year. The time to fully blossom and express ourselves. The time when everything seems to be happening at once! Those of us who tend to run hot need to slow down and cool off. Others may use this time of year to purify by heating the body up to perspire and cool down.  Luckily the practice of Yoga Asana (poses) and Pranayama (breath awareness) offer us ample practices to chill.

A Guru is a person whose very presence imparts truth and awakening in the disciple. When I traveled to Mysore for the first time at the age of 22 I asked Sri K. Pattabhi Jois where I could find the illusive state of inner peace that all yoga practice seeks to instill. Known as Guruji to his students, he said "You take it practice many years, then Shantih is coming... no problem" and my heart opened to the grace of his teaching. It is my great fortune to consider this amazing man my teacher and I attribute the depth of my personal practice and teaching to the light that Guruji's fire ignited within me.
Yoga has an almost addictive quality to it. If you start doing yoga, it starts doing you too. The search for knowledge, wisdom and truth morph into numerous shapes and forms along the inner journey. When you enter the world of yoga sometimes you'll even find a whole Indian performance awaiting you: harmonium, chanting, flowers, pujas, small women demonstrating yoga postures, deities blessing you, henna painting and vegetarians--it's a Bollywood show that draws you in.

Led Primary Series Class and Introduction to Pranayama
The first time I met Richard Freeman, director of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, was during the overture to the Primary Series (Ashtanga's classic postures): Sun Salutation number seven out of 10 on my first visit to his studio. Heeding the warnings about the crowds at his Sunday 3pm mysore class, I arrived cautiously early to claim a space. A good thing: By 2:55 the room buzzed with breath. At 2:59, Richard had not yet arrived. Uncertain of the protocol, I stood, pulse quickening, toes gripping my mat. I followed the cue of my classmates and began to practice.

Filmed as Part of Our Local Teachers Series by Yogini Saraswati, Michelle Dorer teaches us how to practice Ujjayi Breathing, the breath used during Ashtanga Yoga Practice. Michelle is the Director of Ashtanga Yoga in the Outer Banks. The Ashtanga Yoga Center in Nags Head opened September 1, 2005.  It was founded by Michelle Dorer and was inspired by her teacher Tim Miller and her yoga family in Encinitas, CA.
It was another incredibly gorgeous spring night in Central Virginia when Tim Miller arrived for his annual weekend workshop at the Yoga Barn in Ivy. Our recording begins with Sutra I.4 Vrtti Sarupyam Itaratra and Tim asks, If we are not identified with the essential self with what then are we identified? Tim leads us to Sutra I.12, Abhyasa Vairagyabhyam Tannirodhah and reminds us that "The practice of yoga is really the art of learning how to let go...
Kino MacGregor visited Ashtanga Yoga Richmond for the fourth time in early April 2011 and brought a wealth of knowledge to the growing Ashtanga Kula in Central Virginia. Friday night, Kino led the class through the Ashtanga Primary Series and claimed that "For those of you who know me, I talk a great deal, so tonight we will practice."
Tim Miller was the first American certified to teach Ashtanga Yoga by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Center in Mysore, India. That was over 25 years ago. He claims he was “hooked” ever since. After several trips to India and many years of personal practice, Tim opened the Ashtanga Yoga Center in Encinitas, California. Encinitas holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Ashtanga Yoga thanks to the work of David Williams who sponsored Pattabhi Jois on his first trip to the US in 1975. Tim Miller met Pattabhi Jois when he returned to Encinitas in 1978. Tim took over the Ashtanga Yoga Nilayam in 1981 and has inspired countless students on their path.
Jennifer is a senior teacher and director of Ashtanga Yoga of Charlottesville and the Charlottesville Yoga School, Virginia. She studied yoga for 25 years and taught for 15. Jennifer has studied intensively with Richard Freeman and Tim Miller, as well as Pattabhi Jois in India. She can be reached at tjelliott@earthlink.net. The Primary Series is the first of six series of yoga asana sequences as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga and one of the three most well-known students of Krishnamacharya.
