Quadriceps Locust Pose is an intermediate backbend that tones and strengthens the entire back of the body. The Sanskrit name for the pose, “Salabhasana” (shah-lah-BAHS-uh-nuh), comes from two words: “Salabha,” which means “locust”
“Asana,” which means “pose”
Reclining Hero Pose (Supta Virasana) In Sanskrit, ‘supta’ = ‘reclined’ and ‘vira’ = ‘hero’. Hence the name Supta Virasana or Reclined Hero Pose. A variation of the base yoga pose Virasana (Hero Pose), where the torso is in a backbend while resting the head down on the floor. This is the traditional Hatha Yoga Pose while the same yoga pose in Ashtanga Yoga is called Paryankasana (Couch Pose). The practice of this pose Supta Virasana which is categorized under intermediate level requires strong and flexible lower back. Reclining Hero Pose is considered a base pose as reclining hero pose variations can be derived from this pose.

Inverted Poses are some of the most beneficial poses yoga can offer. This is obvious to seasoned yogis and why shoulderstand is referred to as the Queen of Asanas and Headstand is referred to as the King of Asanas. Because we spend most of our time on our feet, inversions offer us the opportunity to turn things upside and allow gravity to work its magic in the opposite direction. I often say that I cannot imagine someone who lives their entire life without practicing an inversion.Shoulder stand, says BKS Iyengar in his formidable Light on Yoga is
People often get confused by the name of Gomukhasana and declare that they cannot see a Cow Face. The best way to see the Cow Face is when the pose is practiced properly with the knees directly one on top of the other. In this way, the mouth of the Cow Face can be seen more prominently. The other key to seeing the Cow Face is when the arms are also in proper position with the upper arm rotating in towards the face and the elbow reaching up towards the sky. This creates one of the ears of the Cow Face.
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana or Bridge Pose is an excellent beginning backbend which is a versatile pose to help learn proper alignment and strengthening for back bending practices as well as Salamba Sarvangasana or Shoulderstand. Natasha Rizopolous of Yoga Journal gives a great overview of the pose in her Basics Column. Energetically, Bridge Pose is an excellent grounding pose for accessing the Root Chakra, stimulating the Thyroid and Throat Chakra and Opening the chest and the Heart Chakra. Inspired by the desire to nourish the kidney meridian which flows through the center of the body including the center line of the legs as well as the Urinary Bladder meridian which flows down the entire back of the body. Backbends can be very stimulating, but move through this challenging sequence slowly working to balance these meridians as opposed to over working and taxing these important energy centers.
This sequence was inspired by Sarah Power's, "Yin Yoga Session for the Lung, Heart and Intestines" from her book Insight Yoga. Practice this as a restorative yin session or a more active hatha yoga sequence. The Lung and Large Intestine Meridians are found in the upper chest and arms. Practice with the intention of stimulating and balancing these meridians in your body.
The Heart, Lung, Large and Small Intestine Meridans all run along the chest cavity around the physical heart and lungs and/or up and down the inner and outer arms. Keep your mind cool as you contemplate and practice this sequence.
The spring season invites us to explore our Liver and Gallbladder meridians on the inner and outer thighs. Consider poses which extend and stretch these areas of the body. On this cold and rainy spring day, I chose more of a restorative practice incorporating Forward Bends and Inversions, but another sequence may include more standing and seated twists. Enjoy.

We are on the other side of the winter solstice, but wintertime encourages us to remain reflective and drawn in, not to overextend ourselves as our energies are different at this time of year.
